Description
-
Calcium Polystyrene Sulphonate.
-
Primary Use: It is a prescription medication used almost exclusively for the treatment of Hyperkalemia, a condition characterized by dangerously high levels of potassium in the blood, often seen in patients with kidney disease.
-
Mechanism of Action: It is a cation-exchange resin that works locally in the digestive tract, not the bloodstream. It releases calcium ions in exchange for potassium ions in the large intestine; the resin holding the excess potassium is then excreted in the feces.
-
Critical Warnings: The most serious risk is severe intestinal damage, such as necrosis or perforation. It can also cause constipation, fecal impaction, and electrolyte imbalances like low potassium (hypokalemia) or high calcium (hypercalcemia).
